What's All the Hype about

Himalayan Pink Salt?

Awhile back, the subject of Salt came up at our house.
Doesn't sound all that exciting, does it? We eat it, cook with it, gargle with it, avoid it. What's to talk about, anyway?

Well, believe it or not, besides those who've made a career out of Salt, there are people who actually read books about it. For fun! I know this because my husband Chris finished one - an entire book. About Salt. I'm not kidding.

Well, this did arouse my curiosity about the latest and greatest Salt trend, so off I went...

...to discover some unexpectedly interesting info about Himalayan Pink Salt:

**In ancient times, it was used as a currency system, its price being higher than its weight in gold. Even today it is known as "White Gold" in its region.

**Yes, it is considered Sea Salt, as it was formed hundreds of millions of years ago in crystallized sea beds, buried deep within the Himalayas, under layers of lava, ice and snow.

**Mined by hand in the Punjab Region of Pakistan, the pink color (which is frequently an orange/salmon color) is due to its iron-rich content.

**The belief is that this Salt has not been penetrated by pollution, and therefore is the purest, most mineral-dense Salt on earth, containing up to 84 trace elements and minerals.

**Salt is naturally anti-microbial, so cleaning Salt items requires only a light rub-over (comes in handy with those Himalayan Pink Salt Shot Glasses that cannot be immersed in water for cleaning!)

**An amazing plethora of healing and restorative powers are credited (far too many to name).

But most exciting to me was this:

Ever wonder why you feel so refreshed after a trip to the beach? It's because you've been deluged with negative ions from the ocean waves, sunlight, waterfalls, lightning storm, or whatever other natural phenomena were present. Negative ions increase the mood chemical Serotonin, helping to alleviate depression and stress, and boost energy.

Here's where Himalayan Salt Lamps come in. It is the combination of Salt, light, and evaporation of water attracted by the Salt in these Lamps that also causes emission of negative ions.

Himalayan Salt Lamps are natural negative ion generators!

Positive ions, on the other hand, are often created by electronic devices such as computers, TVs, microwaves, and even vacuum cleaners. Bad news, too, for sufferers of allergies, stress, and even sleep difficulties, since airborne mold, bacteria, and allergens often carry a positive charge.

Here is the key:

Negative ions neutralize positive ions, cleansing both the air and your disposition!

You know, one can't always pick up and trek to the beach or hike through the trees. So it wasn't long before I purchased my first bags of Himalayan Pink Salt Bath Crystals for friends, and I was off and running. Since then, in addition to the Himalayan Pink Salt Shot Glasses I acquired (as a gift, of course!), I've brought home a Himalayan Salt Inhaler, Himalayan Shaker Salt, several Himalayan Salt Lamps, and am even considering a Himalayan Salt Plank for cooking veggies.

And why not? Promises of better health, clean air, a calmer environment……..it all sounds very attractive, does it not?

Is all this hype really true? Are all the health and scientific claims factual? Honestly, I don't know. But I DO know that I love the "idea" of it, the anticipation of positive outcomes, like super energy boosts and just plain feeling better. And that is good enough for me!
